Computed Tomography (CT Scan)
The CT scanner is a machine with an x-ray tube rotating around a circular window. The patient lies still on a table that can slide in and out of the window. Within the machine, the x-ray tube rotates around the patient's body to pass x-rays and produce images using detectors and powerful computers.
![]() The CT images are like slices of a loaf of bread. The image slices can be viewed as such and also reassembled by computer workstations to obtain a very detailed, multidimensional view of the body's interior. Sabah Medical Centre is equipped with a 64-slice CT scanner Aquilion 64 (Toshiba) - the most advanced system that can perform all types of CT scan examinations including scanning of coronary arteries of the heart. CT scan of the brain is done for head injury, stroke, hemorrhage, brain tumors, hearing problems, infections and sinusitis. CT angiography is a special technique for showing the blood vessels of the brain. CT scan of abdomen is done for abdominal pain, tumors of abdominal organs, injuries of abdominal organs, planning radiotherapy for tumors, and guide biopsies. CT scan of chest is done for lung tumors and other lung diseases such as pneumonia, tuberculosis, emphysema, bronchiectasis, and diffuse interstitial lung disease, pleural diseases, chest injury, aortic aneurysm and pulmonary embolism. Computed Tomography Angiography (CTA) is a specialized CT scan examination that visualizes blood vessels throughout the body. Virtual Colonoscopy (VC) is a specialized examination of the colon that uses CT scanning technique and computer workstations to produce two and three-dimensional images of the colon (large intestine) and display them on a screen. The procedure is used to diagnose diseases such as polyps, diverticulosis, and cancer. Calcium score scan detects the presence of calcium in the coronary arteries. Detection of calcium is an indirect evidence of underlying coronary artery disease. CT Coronary Angiography or Heart Scan is a special scan to visualize the coronary arteries of the heart. It enables the doctors to see any narrowing in these arteries which could give rise to a heart attack. This procedure enables early detection and treatment to prolong the lives of patients with heart diseases. |
